The First Years True Fit Convertible Car Seat 630 is NOT a good carseat for infants in the rear facing position. BEWARE you must have a very FLAT back seat to get the “line level” to work. We would have to stick a towel or 2 under the carseat to get it to be level…thats not very safe. Our old carseat by Evenflo had a nice level system built into the carseat, really disappointed by the “line” level for the First Years model. You CANNOT adjust the straps in the rear position because the carseat will not sit flat. Therefore it makes it really difficult to get my baby in and out of the carseat. We like to loosen the straps some before putting her in or out. The carseat would probably be alot better in the front facing position but we have a long way to go on that… we dont feel comfortable using the seat until then.

The only pros i can say are the cushions are very comfy and the fabric is a nice color.

SAVE YOUR MONEY for the newer model…sounds like alot more adjustable features etc.

Because this car seat perches on top of a base, you must fill in the gap between the base and seatback with either a rolled-up towel, which shifts, or a waternoodle, which gets squished down over time. I found the latch extremely hard to fully tighten because of a lip in the plastic base, which overlaps where my hand needed to be to tighten the latch straps. So i had to pull the tightening belt off to the side, from which position it refused to tighten. From the front seat, I could push the back of the carseat (in the rear-facing position) so that it would hit the seatback in the back seat. If I can easily do this with my hand, wouldn’t baby be slammed face-first into the back seat’s seatback in a head-on collision? I got a Sunshine Kids after this and it fastened so tightly and securely in the rear-facing position, I wonder how any baby is safe in a different seat.

  3. This product gets 1 star because it could not be safely installed in my ‘99 Grand Prix. That’s a deal-breaker, ladies. I can’t solely fault First Years for this problem, every other convertible car seat I looked at had the same problem, but I didn’t buy and return those car seats, I bought and returned this one.

A convertible car seat in the rear-facing position is supposed to be reclined at a 45 degree angle, and there’s a leveler to help you get it right. The First Years True Fit, as well as every other car seat I looked at (save one), reclined to 45 degrees when they were seated on a level surface (the store shelf, for instance). The problem, however, is that no bench seat is level. While seats in minivans and SUV’s have a slight pitch (say 5 degrees or so), the back bench in my Grand Prix, and most other sedans, have a much larger pitch (we’ll say 15 degrees for arguments sake).

That means that I am supposed to prop up the car seat with towels and pool noodles (I’m not making this up, the manual literally told me to prop up the car seat using a pool noodle) in order to get the car seat to a level position. I would have been okay with this, if I only had to prop up the car seat a half inch or an inch, but I was looking at 3 – 4 inches. That is totally unacceptable.

It’s for this reason that I highly recommend the Evenflo Symphony. I went through every single car seat in the store, and almost all of them reclined to 45 degrees when they were sitting on the shelf, which would have meant a visit to the pool section to buy pool noodles. The only car seat that reclined further than 45 degrees, compensating for the bench pitch, was the Evenflo Symphony. When I installed the Evenflo, it was in the exact position that it was supposed to be, and it didn’t require any rolled up towels, newspaper, gently worn clothing, or pool noodles to get it level.

I don’t know if this is normal for a carseat, but isnt there supposed to be instructions for this device?

I am highly disappointed with this product after reading such rave reviews from everyone else.

    - the fabric is cheaply made and has gaps in it that goes to the plastic base. My daughter is constantly shoving her hands through the opening part of the fabric lining where the crotch buckle is to get at the inner mechanisms. Plus, if you don’t use all the extra linings (for a bigger child) there are more gaps in the fabric for children to run their hands in or lose their food/toys, etc.

    - the strap to loosen/tighten the buckle is extremely tight and hard to use. When I pull it to tighten, i have to struggle with it and sometimes just can’t get a tight enough fit over my daughter’s chest. Not safe.

    - the straps over the chest don’t have nice cushioned pads. I am constantly having to adjust them around my daughter’s neck so she doesn’t come out of the car seat with severe red marks from the straps indenting her neck (think rug burn type track marks, but on her neck).

    - I bought the cappuccino seat as I wanted a lighter color. However, when you take out all the inserts, it’s no longer a light color, but BLACK – which harbors more heat between the seat and her body. Not impressed. If I wanted black, I would have bought black. I keep the lining in now just to have the light color, although I think my daughter would be more comfortable with more space.

    - if you don’t use the headrest, but use the base only with one lining, there is no way for your child/baby to rest their head for a nap. I have to put a blankie or wad up a jacket or clothing of my 1 yr old baby to give her a pillow for her head comfort. Otherwise her hed is bobbing around and she can’t rest it easily for a nap in the car seat. I watch her even struggle with it sometimes. She herself will try to lodge her blankies around her head to give her comfort, although she doesn’t truly know what she is doing – but she is looking for comfort that I believe.

    - it was not easy to initially install. When the seat comes from the manufacturer, they thread the latch mechanism through holes that it is not meant to go through. You have to read the instructions carefully and then rethread the latch to the proper spot. Not sure why they just can’t put it there to begin with.

Overall, not impressed. We obviously are keeping it, but i have car seat envy on others. My husband is furious with me for purchasing this and I keep telling him I bought it because it is the highest rated car seat out there. I only wish it lived up to my expectations. Avoid spousal arguments and make sure BOTH of you read the ratings and agree on a car seat. My hours of research did NOT pay off with this one. I like my Recaro much better.
